Manuscript assessment & development

An assessment of a manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses, offering constructive advice on how the work might be sharpened and elevated.

Structural / developmental editing

A detailed written report or manuscript markup analysing the book’s structure and overall cohesiveness — plot, characterisation, setting and thematic treatment.

Copy-editing

Editing the manuscript line by line, checking grammar, spelling, consistency of style, clarity and expression.

Experience

Nadine Davidoff is a freelance book editor and writing/editing teacher with extensive trade publishing experience. She has worked as a Senior Editor at Random House and a Commissioning Editor at Black Inc.

Nadine’s clients include major publishing companies and literary agents for whom she undertakes manuscript assessment and development. Nadine also offers manuscript development services to established and first-time authors seeking editorial feedback before submitting their work to an agent or publisher.

Nadine has taught in RMIT’s Professional Writing and Editing course, she teaches fiction editing at Melbourne University and holds private writing and editing workshops. Between 2015–19, she taught the three-day masterclass as part of the ACT Writers’ Centre Hard Copy Program.

Open Eyes to China

Nadine was selected to represent Random House and Australia on Open Eyes to China, a literary excursion organised by Toby Eady and Xinran in April 2004 — one of eleven publishing practitioners from around the world.

Nadine was invited to attend John Marsden’s January Writers’ Conference at Tye Estate in 2003, one of four editors selected each year to give editorial feedback to participants.
